Combi: Electric Cathedral
Saturday, September 24 - 7:30pm
The underground Latin American dance-music party is in residence in New York with Combi. A group of Latin Americans living in the U.S. who are creating attention-grabbing songs, videos, paintings, photographs, remixes, and films, Combi is a community of artists who prove that their culture is more than Enrique Iglesias and Shakira.
The evening features Mexican electronica, courtesy of Sweet Electra, which originated in Guadalajara, the cradle of Mexico’s electronic music scene. Sweet Electra’s signature style, created by programmer /producer Giovanni Escalera, features rescued Latin rhythms, strong dance beats, and lyrics sung in Spanish, English, and French by vocalist/composer Nardiz Cooke.
Tapping songs from their latest album, Contramano, led by Pablo Cubarle, sets swirling keyboards, grooving beats, and the irrepressible chugging of the electric cello against the backdrop of an original short film.
